I'm a clencher.

Temporomandibular joint disorder -
is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the
temporomandibular joint, which connects the mandible to the skull.
The disorder can result in
significant pain and impairment.

Yup.
I agree.
So I've had this for a long time.
Never bothered me.
I'm a clencher.
I think I've always clenched my teeth.
I try not to but when you're trying not
to say something to the obnoxious
woman in the middle of the
aisle at the grocery store - you
tend to clench your teeth.

Well, anyway, this TMJ thing decided
to rear it's ugly head while I was away.
My jaw just went out of whack.
That's the only way to describe it.
It went sideways instead of up and down.
I was all, "Whoa, where do you think you're going???"
And it was all, "Just shut your mouth, oh wait,
you can't!!! HA HA HA!!"
Well, now it HURTS!
Last night I woke up and I think
it was a little dislocated.
KERRY - HOW CAN YOUR JAW BE JUST A LITTLE
DISLOCATED.
I don't know but I couldn't close my mouth.
I know, for those of you who know me,
that doesn't seem out of character.
It hurts man.
So treatment calls for:
Tylenol
warm compresses
soft food
no clenching
Believe it or not - the hardest part is the clenching.
Love to clench.

Hello fellow TMJ'er. I've had this for 20 years now, and I'm only in my 30's!!! My recommendations? Find a dentist or a specialist in TMJ, get a good mouth guard for nighttime use. During the day, you want to try to never have you jaw in the "closed" position. No gum, no chewy things. It sucks, but... it won't kill us. Right? email me if you need any tips.

Feel better!

So sorry you're dealing with this. It's a real pain, I know--it happens to me all the time. Try an ice pack on the affected side. Sometimes it is a muscle spasm and the ice reduces the inflammation in the muscle and allows it to relax and your jaw will slip back into place. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Oh no! I hope you're feeling better! I do that too, but only to the extent of giving myself what feels like an earache. And it might be why I've cracked two teeth.
