First day of camp - done.
It was....um.......a little hectic, but
it always is on the first day.
One of our busses had a problem
this morning. We lease our busses,
and drivers (none of us drive busses,
they're all professionals).
A driver had a STROKE while driving
the kids to camp this morning!
She passed out at the wheel,
and the bus started hitting
cars. It is my understanding that
they were not going fast. They
were in local traffic. The 16 year old
bus counselor
had the presence of mind to
pull the emergency brake and stop
the bus. Thank God, no one was hurt,
well, except for the driver.
The kids were all fine, all other drivers
were fine. Everyone went to the hospital to
get checked out.
Unfortunately, the driver is not doing well.
How about that counselor, huh?
He's a Life Scout (right before Eagle Scout)
So proud of him!
Yeah, so there you go - first day of camp.
38 more to go and I reeaaaallllllly hope
they are much less eventful.
Oh wait I have a question:
Do I let my 13 year old son go on a
trip with camp to the beach for the day.
To the ocean.
With hundreds of other people.
Do I let him go when I won't be there
keeping my eyes on him every second
he's in the water?
He's a great swimmer, but, you know,
it's the ocean.
Weigh in people.
Paul says let him go.
Here are the facts:
About 30 kids going ranging in
age from 13-15.
5 adult counselors.
Life guards.
Ocean.
No mommy.
What would you do?

Oh, gosh...that bus story sounds familiar but the bus in our town was in a mountain pass...thankfully they were stopped for a break. SO glad things turned out, overall, okay!
Okay, I would have a hard time saying yes too. Thirty kids, five adults...that's a pretty good ratio. When my middle son was in middle school he would go to adventure camp and do an overnight adventure (rafting, mountain biking, etc) and he did just fine.
I can't tell you what to do though 'cuz that is completely up to you!
Good luck and happy camp!
OMG! What a crazy start to camp! That poor driver--I hope she recovers quickly.
As for your son's trip I can't give an opinion. On one hand I remember what it was like to be the only kid to not be allowed to go on class trips because they were "too far". But on the other hand, as a mother I'd want to be there. Sorry I know that doesn't really help. Good luck!
And thanks for your comments on my blog! I really appreciate them!!
Holy moly! I am glad no one else was hurt and will keep the driver in my thoughts.
I completely understand the hesitation to let him go, but he is old enough and from the sounds of it mature enough. As long as there are lifeguards, I have to go with your husband on this one. It is the first of many many steps, it will be ok! just breathe!!!
How scary on the bus thing! Great job from the counselor.
On the beach thing, if I'm not too late - I let my gal (age 13 at the time) go to a beach thing that was outside of my comfort zone. Like Sara said, there's the whole, "Only kid not allowed to go bec. of overprotective parents" thing. I assume you know the adult counselors since you work at the camp. I would ask them whatever safety questions that you have before coming to a final decision. I love, love, love the beach, but the ocean is a dangerous place. At least when my gal went it was only about five kids to two adults, so I felt a little better. Although I feel like I could have found out more than I did and still not have been over the top overprotective. For what it's worth, she didn't get eaten by a shark or anything. :-)
